Some things just make more sense when they are explained. Take a look and see if your question is one of the more common ones asked about Beaufort County's Department of Parks and Recreation.
Frequently Asked Questions

What are the hours of operation our facilities?
The hours of operation vary by facility and location. See our web page sections on our various operations for opening and closing times.
Why do we charge for some things, but not others?
Our user fees and policies are reviewed periodically and adjusted as necessary by the Beaufort County Council, whose decision is binding by rule of law. Revenues from organized sports help to offset the costs associated with making them available to the public. Rental fees for facilities help to offset the cost of maintaining them for public use. User fees for pools help to offset the cost of maintaining the pools and the significant overhead associated with them. In absence of these user-based fees, we would require significantly more money from the county’s general fund to stay afloat. The result of this would likely be higher taxes for all county residents; even the ones who may not use our facilities or services.
Sometimes there are more lifeguards on duty then there are swimmers in the pool. Are you overstaffing?
The number of lifeguards required at pools is specified by SC Department of Health and Environmental Control regulations. The number of lifeguards required is driven by the area size of the pool itself.
Athletic fields are funded by public money. As a taxpayer, can I use them anytime I want?
Athletic fields must be reserved, and in most cases, there is a fee for usage which varies with the type of activity, duration of rental, etc. Athletic fields are a county resource and are expensive to maintain. Overuse or misuse of fields equates to an unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars. Unauthorized use of athletic fields can place the user subject to trespassing charges.
How much do your coaches get paid?
All coaches are members of the community who have volunteered their time and efforts to help teach athletic fundamentals and further the development of our youth in an active capacity. We do give coaches a $40.00 coaching discount at the end of the season that they can apply to another registration to thank them for their volunteer hours.
Why don’t you offer (insert sport here)?
Most recreational sports are offered as a result of community interest or a demonstrated history of support and participation. Adding recreational sports to our lineup is possible if there is enough interest generated.
How do I get a job with BC Parks & Recreation?
Our job opportunities are posted online at http://bcgov.net/employment/index.php. In addition to occasional full-time vacancies, we are also in need of temporary employees for the summer months to support the expansion of aquatic activities.
